Living with Epilepsy
"The co-existence of psychological conditions, such as anxiety and depression, in people living with epilepsy is not uncommon. It is estimated that around half of all adults experience depression and around 20% experience generalised anxiety disorder" - epilepsyfoundation.org.au
Epilepsy Counselling offers a range of strategies and interventions to support individuals living with epilepsy, and their families.
This includes, but is not limited to:
-
Emotional Support
- Coping Strategies
- Mental Health Management
- Life Transitions
- Practical Guidance
Important: Counselling should never replace prescribed anti-seizure medication.
How can a Counsellor's lived experience benefit the client?
A counsellor can offer invaluable, first-hand guidance on navigating specific challenges based on their own successful strategies, if it has a direct benefit to the client.
Clients often feel a sense of safety and belonging, and validation when working with a counsellor who has a shared understanding of their experiences.
Lived experience helps ensure that services are more relevant, accessible, and effective for the those they serve.
More about Simon
I was first diagnosed with Absence seizures at the age of three, and later with Tonic clonic seizures at the age of 18. I have never held a car license, however, have achieved many personal goals during the course of my life, with the positivity and encouragement of family and friends. Throughout my life I have enjoyed travel, rugby, sailing and the outdoors. I am married with two children. I have twenty five years experience of business ownership in the property and construction industries, prior to transitioning into counselling. I believe that we should never allow our epilepsy to define us.
Simon's approach
My Epilepsy Counselling service embodies is a muli-faceted, holistic approach. Online and mobile counselling provides a safe, secure environment for you to share your feelings, fears and anxieties, hopes and goals with me relating to epilepsy. No two journeys are the same, however, there may be similar experiences that are relatable from my journey through childhood, adolesence and adulthood; that may provide some guidance and support. As a Counsellor, I am focused on your journey, however, if it directly benefits you, I will offer my personal experience.
Family members, carers and friends
Family members, carers and friends traditonallly form the critical support base for individuals diagnosed. Epilepsy can significantly impact you too causing emotional stress, social isolation, financial strain, and disruptions to daily life. Counselling is accessible for you too, and I welcome your enquiry.
